Thinking About the Skills Teachers of Tomorrow Will Need

The last few years, catalyzed by the pandemic, have accelerated the systemic transformation of our approach to education.

While the effects were—and still are—widely felt by all, few felt a more profound shift than teachers. The shift to remote learning spotlighted the skills and approaches that today’s teachers—and especially the next generation of educators—need to create inclusive, equitable learning experiences.

Let’s look at the teacher of tomorrow:

Tomorrow’s Teachers Have High-Level Digital Literacy

Tomorrow’s teachers must be highly adaptable to changing technological trends in education. They need to navigate and leverage the latest technologies and possess such mastery that they can impart digital literacy to their students.

We already live in a world where digital literacy is as fundamental as reading and writing. If we are truly going to enhance student outcomes, digital literacy is non-negotiable.

Tomorrow’s Teachers Are Culturally Competent

The classroom is a microcosm of the wider world. Nurturing inclusive environments that respect and integrate diverse cultural perspectives will be a differentiating, in-demand skill.

This means moving beyond basic awareness to implementing culturally responsive teaching practices that recognize and harness the strengths of all students.

Tomorrow’s Teachers Possess a Sensitive Social-Emotional Intellect

Tomorrow’s educators will support students’ emotional and social development. They will need to be empathetic and able to recognize and respond to their student’s emotional and psychological needs.

This involves fostering a supportive classroom that prioritizes student well-being, mitigates factors that lead to social anxiety, and avoids student (and teacher) burnout.

Tomorrow’s Teachers Are Data-Driven

Tomorrow’s teachers analyze educational outcomes through a data-driven lens. Teachers must insightfully interpret student performance data and engagement metrics to tailor and optimize their instructional strategies.

This approach allows for a more personalized learning experience, helping each student reach their full potential their way.

Tomorrow’s Teachers Have an Entrepreneurial Spirit

An entrepreneurial mindset empowers teachers to be proactive, resilient, and creative problem solvers. The political push and pull of education isn’t going anywhere, and even as we make progress, new challenges will emerge.

Viewing these challenges as opportunities to innovate within classrooms and beyond will help the next generation of educators develop and implement new educational programs or tools, seek out or create additional funding sources, and even pioneer novel ways to engage with and inspire their students.

Tomorrow Is Now

While these skills should be commonplace among tomorrow’s teachers, it’s never too early to develop them. If you’re a teacher, start small, but get started. If you’re a parent, ask if your school has a professional development plan to support teachers in this evolutionary work. If you’re an administrator, start hiring for these skills and incentivizing them among your existing staff. If you’re a policy maker, advocate for change that gives schools a bigger budget to future-proof their approach.

Equipping teachers with these skills ensures they can lead their classrooms with confidence and creativity, making learning a joyous and enriching journey for all. If it were up to me, we wouldn’t have to wait until tomorrow.
